What is Epilepsy?
Epilepsy is a medical condition that produces seizures affecting a variety of mental and physical functions. It’s also called a seizure disorder. When a person has two or more unprovoked seizures, they are considered to have epilepsy.
A seizure happens when a brief, strong surge of electrical activity affects part or all of the brain.
Facts and Figures
- 200,000 new cases of epilepsy are diagnosed each year.
- Incidence is highest under the age of 2 and over 65.
- 326,000 school children through age 15 have epilepsy.
- 70 percent of people with epilepsy can be expected to enter remission, defined as 5 or more years seizure free on medication.
- 75 percent of people who are seizure free on medication for 2 to 5 years can be successfully withdrawn from medication.
- 10 percent of new patients fail to gain control of seizures despite optimal medical management.

The ketogenic diet has been used to control seizures since the 1920's. It fell out of use with the development of medications, but under went resurgence in the early 1990's as it became and still remains a popular form of therapy for seizure control.
