Cytotine is a pH stabilized creatine-monohydrate Medical Food. Creatine is a compound produced naturally by the liver, that can enhance cellular energy stores. After metabolic synthesis, creatine is absorbed into tissues such as the brain, skeletal muscles and various skin tissues.

 

The body's creatine kinase (CK) system -- one of a number of unique systems responsible for providing energy to living cells. The CK sytem is designed to deliver energy to those tissues that have sudden and/or high energy demands such as the brain, skeletal muscles and heart.

 

The CK system converts creatine to phosphocreatine, which, in turn, transforms adenosine diphosphate (ADP) to adenosine triphosphate (ATP). This enzymatic transformation occurs in the mitochondria where ATP then exits the mitochondria and is used to meet the immediate energy needs of the cell.

Cerebral creatine deficiency syndromes (CCDSs) are a group of inborn errors of creatine metabolism comprising two autosomal recessive disorders that affect the biosynthesis of creatine – i.e. arginine:glycine amidinotransferase deficiency and guanidinoacetate methyltransferase deficiency – and an X-linked defect that affects the creatine transporter. The common clinical presentation in CCDS includes mental retardation, expressive speech and language delay, autistic like behaviour and epilepsy. Treatment of the creatine biosynthesis defects has yielded clinical improvement with creatine monohydrate supplementation, while for creatine transporter deficiency, successful treatment strategies still need to be investigated.
