Medical Nutrition Company Launches Cyto-Q
Cyto-Q as a Medical Food - Solace Nutrition has partnered with the leading Coenzyme Q10 manufacturer, Tishcon, to develop Cyto-Q. Tishcon has been awarded Orphan Drug (FDA) designated status for Coenzyme Q10 in the treatment of Mitochondrial Cytopathies. Cyto-Q is to be used under medical supervision in the dietary management of very rare and serious mitochondrial disorders and other metabolic disorders, where patients are not capable of producing adequate levels of Coenzyme Q10. Coenzyme Q10 is mostly concentrated in the mitochondria and other organelles, whose primary purpose is energy production.
Mitochondrial Disease – primarily affects children, but adult onset is becoming more and more common. It is classified as an Inborn Error of Metabolism and results from an operational failure of the mitochondria, which are specialized compartments present in every cell of the body except red blood cells. Mitochondria are responsible for creating more than 90% of the energy needed by the body. This energy is necessary to sustain life and support growth. When mitochondria fail to operate as needed, energy is not adequately generated within the cell and cell injury, and even cell death, can follow. When this process is repeated throughout the body, whole systems begin to fail, and life of the individual can become severely compromised.
Mark De Fries, Chief Executive Officer of Solace Nutrition commented that: “clinical studies demonstrated that Ubiquinol is the most effective suppressant of free radicals and also increases mitochondrial energy output. While Coenzyme Q10 exists in both ubiquinol and ubiquinone forms, the ubiquinol form has been shown to be vastly more bio-available than conventional ubiquinone, commonly sold as an OTC supplement. We are excited about bringing this new Medical Food to the marketplace”.
Patient Options - Until now, patients could only purchase Coenzyme Q10 in the Ubiquinone form (less bio-available). The products were classified as Dietary Supplements and purchased at retail stores and outlets. Unfortunately, the quality of the supplement form of Coenzyme-Q10 (Ubiquinone) is never guaranteed. Plus, individuals and/or their families were burdened with paying 100% of the cost of Coenzyme Q10 purchased with essentially no support from medical insurance.
Solace Nutrtion’s launch of Cyto-Q offers relief to patients by meeting their needs. Cyto-Q is available in easy to consume pineapple-orange flavored liquipaks. Each Cyto-Q guarantees delivering 80 mg of the ubiquinol form - of Coenzyme Q10 in each liquipak. Additionally, Cyto-Q is classified as a Medical Food, which allows for coverage by some insurance companies and government agencies.
Charles A. Mohan, Jr., CEO and Executive Director of the United Mitochondrial Disease Foundation is quoted as saying “The launch of this product is very important for those who suffer from a mitochondrial disease. In most cases, prescription plans do not cover the purchase of the supplements and dietary products needed by the patients. This is exciting because, depending on the patient’s prescription plan, Cyto-Q may be covered and that is a huge cost savings benefit for mitochondrial disease patients.”
